The debate between Confucius and Zigong over the mourner, cited by Ing from the "Tangong Shang" chapter (pp. 133-135), may be taken as an example.\n It is perhaps worth noting that the portions of that work with which Ing's book does not explicitly engage- understandably, as it focuses on the failure of ritual rather than its performance in general-largely take the form of "ritual scripts" in the literal sense, that is, written instructions for ritual.6 Ing's approach shines brightest when it draws nearest to literary criticism. The appendix on the textual history of the Liji will serve as a nice instructional supplement to the chapter on the Liji in Early Chinese Texts: A Bibliographical Guide, particularly inas- much as it points out the significance of certain recent manuscript finds for the study of the text.7 Ing's book will likely trigger a flood of new English-language scholarship on the Liji, which alone would make it worthwhile.
