Beschreibungen/Notizen
  • We evaluated serum antibody production, and mortality following severe intraperitoneal challenge with Vibrio anguillarum, in turbot ( Scophthalmus maximus) which had been immersion-and/or injection-vaccinated with toxoid-enriched whole cells of the V. anguillarum virulent wild strain R-82. Our results show: (a) that immersion vaccination does not provoke appreciable increases in serum antibody levels; (b) that enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with a monoclonal antibody to turbot Ig is (unlike agglutination assay) sufficiently sensitive for quantitating post-vaccination serum antibody production in turbot; and (c) that immersion vaccination (unless followed by an intraperitoneal booster) does not protect turbot against severe challenge with a V. anguillarum virulent strain. These results strongly suggest that the protection against challenge provided by injection is mediated by serum antibodies.
