  • The preparation, stabilisation and high-temperature treatment of enstatite foams are reported. The technique is based on foaming a talc suspension, stabilisation of the foam structure and high-temperature treatment after drying. The spontaneous delamination of aggregates and the redistribution of talc particles in the foam were driven by a decreasing surface energy. The changes in phase composition and the mechanism and kinetics of the processes which take place during thermal treatment were investigated. Treatment in the temperature range 1150 to 1250 C prepared the ceramic foam via sintering without a melted phase, whereas liquid phase sintering occurred at higher temperatures. The final sintering temperature was 1300 C. Increasing the amount of melted phase supported the formation of enclosed porosity and formed glass which stabilised the high-temperature protoenstatite polymorph in the foam. The thermal treatment of foam provides the ceramic foam with high service temperature and chemical stability, high porosity, extremely low volume density and excellent thermal insulating properties.
