An attempt was made to prepare emerald-green malayaite pigments using CaCO3, SiO2, SnO2 and V2O5. For this purpose, the optimum composition is CaV0.25Sn0.687SiO5 and optimum firing conditions are 1250 C for a 6 h soaking time. The samples were characterised by XRD, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, SEM and UV/Vis spectroscopy. The substituted vanadium ion for tin was found to be quadrivalent. The crystal structure was tetragonal, a typical form of malayaite, and the particle size was about 5-10 micron. The colour of lime glaze containing 12 wt% pigment was emerald green, and the CIE Lab parameters are L* = 67.73, a* = -12.39 and b* = 9.28.
