This article investigates structural factors in the rising share of singles among women and men in Germany. It contains a synopsis of theses and theoretical discussions, a description of the increase in singles, an exploration of structural effects on the risks of being without a partner, as well as investigations into whether increasing risks of singleness are linked to shifts in social structure. Results indicate that the rise in singleness partially depends on shortages in the market for partners, the increase in female labor participation, rising unemployment, and increasing occupational uncertainty. The study is based on data from the German Socio-Economic Panel Survey (GSOEP). Adapted from the source document.
