Harlem, like a number of other northern Manhattan neighborhoods, became a viable option for black settlement as early as 1905, at which point it was marketed in local publications as "a transformative space for people hungering for geographical, economic, political and social change"-specifically black folks seeking sanctuary from racist violence and legislated discrimination in the South.
