Ombrotrophic peatlands are nitrogen poor environments, relying solely on atmospheric N deposition. Yet, there is an imbalance in atmospheric N deposition and N accumulation in Sphagnum mosses, with N accumulation by far exceeding N-deposition rates, suggesting other N sources to be supporting Sphagnum growth. Although there is accumulating evidence for a more widespread occurrence of anaerobic methane oxidation, aerobic methane oxidation appears to be the terminal process in terrestrial ecosystems, exhibiting 23 orders of magnitude higher methane oxidation rates
