Tokarczyk discusses poets Chris Llewellyn and Diane Gilliam Fisher, who have each written a collection of poems about a key struggle in the Labor Movement. Both Llewellyn's "Fragments from the Fire" (1987) and Fisher's "Kettle Bottom" (2004) represent events that occurred during the first two decades of the twentieth century. In Llewellyn's and Fisher's work, the promise of the American dream is powerfully juxtaposed with the reality of exploitation and poverty that both immigrants and American-born citizens faced.
