The safety of vitamins used to be simply stated: all water-soluble vitamins are safe at any level of intake and all fat-soluble vitamins are toxic, especially when intakes are above 10 times the recommended intake levels. This review examines the data, mainly from well-controlled, clinical trials, that indicate that not all water-soluble vitamins are safe at any level of intake. Likewise, not all fat-soluble vitamins are toxic at or above 10 times the recommended levels of intake.
