- Chronic pollution of the open ocean has taken place since 1986 through municipal sewage sludge disposal at a deep-water dumpsite off the coast of New Jersey. Research shows that this material reaches the sea floor and becomes part of the benthic food web, specifically through surface-deposit feedings of the Echinus affinus urchin and the Benthodytes sanguinolenta sea cucumber.
