  • A novel carbon foam was prepared by direct pyrolysis of boric acid/mesophase pitch mixtures at high pressure, via a foaming and carbonization process. The influence of boric acid addition on the microstructure and properties of as-prepared carbon foam was investigated in detail. Results have shown that boric acid can promote the graphitization degree of carbon foams, which led to an increase of thermal conductivity. At the boric acid content of 5wt%, the resultant foam possessed the highest thermal conductivity of 80.15W/mK. At the same time, the correlations between microstructure and properties are also discussed. •Investigation was carried out to determine the effect on the structure and properties of the carbon foam through the addition of boric acid to carbon foam.•The results have shown that boron enhanced the graphitization of graphite, and also improved its microstructure.•A high thermal conductivity of 80.15W/mK for the carbon foam with a boric acid concentration of 5wt% was obtained at temperature of 2573K.
