Methods for detecting resistance to chlorpyrifos and cypermethrin in the German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.), were evaluated. Results from the tarsal-contact method (jar test) are greatly influenced by the amount of insecticide used. In tests with high levels of insecticide, little or no resistance was detected. By using less insecticide, the existence of resistance was revealed. Recognition of this fact allows discrepancies between the lethal dose, lethal concentration, and lethal time methods to be largely resolved. These findings indicate that caution must be exercised in the use of the jar test to avoid misinterpretation of the results
