The fractionation of carbon isotopes on culturing Corynebacterium glutamicum 3144 in media with molasses and acetate has been studied. On cultivation on molasses the distribution of the carbon isotopes in glutamic acid produced by C. glutamicum 3144 is characterized by enrichment of the carboxyl carbon of the acid with the super(13)C isotope ( delta super(13)C = -20 multiplied by 6 ppt) relative to the total carbon of the molecule (-28 multiplied by 0 ppt) and the latter with the super(12)C isotope relative to the carbon of the substrate (-22 multiplied by 2 ppt). On culturing on acetate the intramolecular distribution of the isotopes in glutamic acid is characterized by impoverishment of carboxyl carbon with the super(13)C isotope ( delta super(13)C = -29 multiplied by 4 ppt) relative to the total carbon of the acid ( delta super(13)C = -26 multiplied by 7 ppt) and the latter with the super(13)C isotope relative to the carbon of acetate ( delta super(13)C = -32 multiplied by 2 ppt).
