Eleven years ago, African states made formidable progress by jointly adopting the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (the Maputo Protocol) regarded as one of the most progressive women’s and human rights instruments in the world. To date, because of advocacy by the SOAWR coalition, 48 countries have signed of which 36 have ratified Africa’s ‘homegrown CEDAW’ that comprehensively addresses the rights of African women, ranging from economic and social welfare rights, to sexual and reproductive health rights.
