A new synthesis route for beta -MgAl sub(2)C sub(2) is presented. The synthesis of this carbide compound was based on a solid-state metathesis reaction. The material was prepared at 900 degree C from aluminium powder, MgCl sub(2) and Li sub(2)C sub(2). The reaction product was inspected by X-ray powder diffraction and super(13)C NMR spectroscopy. beta -MgAl sub(2)C sub(2) was synthesized at 900 degree C in a closed system with the use of Li sub(2)C sub(2) in a solid-state metathesis reaction. This new synthesis method for ternary carbides employs Li sub(2)C sub(2) as a source of carbon ions and can be applied to the synthesis of other multinary carbides.
