• Small n methodology involves rigorous experimental designs that maximize internal validity with a high degree of experimental control. They avoid some problems of large group studies, including recruitment problems and high operating costs. In addition, they provide the flexibility and responsiveness needed in pharmacologic research, where information about dose-response relationships can be obtained through repeated measurements in baseline and intervention phases and the immediacy and magnitude of effects are readily discernable. Although large group, randomized clinical trials are likely to remain the standard, the increasing evidence of scientific contributions through small n research methodology cannot be ignored.
