All too often, shows are designed simply to take advantage of whatever is hot in marketing. One popular western soon meant a dozen westerns of varying quality, and one successful police procedural had us overwhelmed by spinoffs, but some shows have redefined a genre in ways that alter not only the medium but the viewers. Beverly Hills, 90210 and Buffy the Vampire Slayer may seem like teen fluff to some, but they had a significant impact on television's teen-based programs and their audiences by taking on controversial subjects in a forthright manner that made teens think about uncomfortable, even frightening issues affecting them.
