Recently, a clinical condition, which we call "crack eye", appeared in Detroit. A common complaint of patients coming into the emergency room at our institution is burning of the eyes after smoking crack cocaine. A 20-year-old woman came to the emergency room and was seen by the ophthalmology service because of bilateral total corneal epithelial defects. She had pain, photophobia, lacrimation, chemosis, and injection. The irritation from the smoke of the crack cocaine combined with the brief, but intense, euphoric characteristic of the drug caused the patient to rub her eyes vigorously, thus denuding the corneal epithelium.
