  • Vertical profiles of total organic carbon (TOC), hydrocarbons, fatty acids and 2- and 3-hydroxy acids in Fryxell lake were examined in relation to lake stratification and microbial distribution. The TOC concentration in the anoxic bottom layers was much higher than in the toxic layers. Total fatty acid contents implied that photosynthetic plankton were most abundant just above the anoxic zone. Fatty acids in the toxic layers were associated with planktonic autotrophs. Dissolved fatty acids in the anoxic layer were attributed to bacterial degradation. Branched fatty acids and 3-hydroxy acids indicated that bacteria were more abundant in anoxic layers than oxic layers. The organic composition in the water column was difference to that in lake sediments due to rapid degradation of micro-organisms on the lake bottom. There are 31 references.
