• The importance of the cost of electricity in irrigation farming in the Winterton area is assessed. The extent to which electricity was used was studied and a cost analysis was carried out for typical centre pivot and drag line irrigation systems used for different cash crops. The same soil was used during observations but system variables included application capacity, static pumping height, pumping pressures and motor size. Electricity costs accounted for a significant proportion of total irrigation costs, 75 per cent of total where centre pivot systems were used and 88 per cent of total for drag line systems. Use of electricity for irrigation accounted for 10-29 per cent of cash and grazing crop production costs. It was therefore important to manage the design and usage of irrigation schemes and electricity tariffs used for irrigation farming.
