• STaR is the first head-to-head study to directly compare the safety and efficacy of the two single-tablet regimens (STRs), rilpivirine/emtricitabine/tenofovir DF (RPV/FTC/TDF) and efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir DF (EFV/FTC/TDF) in HIV-1-infected, treatment-naive adults. Previous studies have demonstrated that treatment with RPV/FTC/TDF has a neutral effect on fasting lipids in treatment-naive subjects and switching to RPV/FTC/TDF from a ritonavirboosted protease inhibitor regimen results in improvement in lipid profiles. Overall RPV/FTC/TDF demonstrated non-inferior virological efficacy and had minimal impact on fasting lipids through week 96. By contrast, treatment with EFV/FTC/TDF resulted in worsening of TC and LDL from baseline to week 96 but improvement in HDL compared to RPV/FTC/TDF, with coincident shifts across NCEP categories.
