• In an era of managing marine fisheries for optimum yield, success is partly dependent on the quality and objectivity of biological, economic, and sociological advice provided by fishery science. The assessments and predictions may be in error because of oversimplified models, incorrect or incomplete data, or the intrusion of values. Even when the advice is sound, it may be discounted by management entities, or measures may be implemented that are inappropriate or unenforced. Improvements in management performance could result from better technical analysis and a better fit between regulations and industry practices. Furthermore, fishery institutions, agendas and procedures merit the attention of policy analysts.
