Le Démolisseur, painted by Paul Signac between 1897 and 1899, was an important painting for the artist. The aim of this study is to analyse this particular painting in depth but also to address some wider cultural and political issues. Perhaps obviously enough, given that the subject of Le Démolisseur is a workman breaking up a building, the polarity which forms the armature of my argument is destruction and construction. But this dialectical pairing does not merely deal with material actuality and actions wrought upon it; it equally belongs to ideology and its rhetoric. Construction and destruction are deep-rooted metaphors, central to thehuman understanding of social environment and change within it. When looking at Le Démolisseur - and it will take some pages to reach it - we see actuality and action, but it is crucial to remember metaphor and rhetoric.
