  •   Gardening is hard work, but those with a green thumb know no greater joy than looking at their plants. The best alternative therapy most gardeners swear by, is having a verdant patch in your yard. The fact that flowers add colour and beauty to any landscape highlights the need to have your own garden, more so during the hot and humid months when the sun is exceptionally harsh. Roman philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero famously said, "If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need." With summer upon us, and temperatures soaring, a home garden full of foliage and flowers is the perfect recipe to ensure the days are less warm and the evenings, a delight. Having said that, to make your plants survive and prevent flowers from fading away in the cruel heat, you need to treat them right in the sweltering months. Here's my recommendation of summer plants that are heat tolerant and continue to bloom despite soaring heat. Most useful flowering shrub in Indian gardens during summer and monsoon, it comes in a number of varieties with different heights. It likes to be constantly moist, but not wet. The trumpet-shaped flowers range from yellow to peach to red. A collection of Hibiscus plants can very conveniently enrich the garden and terrace of any size. Some other varieties of shrubs are Caladium, Gardenia, Hamelia and Ixora. Plant all these varieties judiciously in pots, beds, ground or borders depending upon the space available and create a glorious summer garden.
