Dominant perceptions in America have tended to identify Britain as an old country; in Antoinette Burton's phrase, a land where little distinction between past and present [can] be discerned. In the early- to mid-1960s, however, a wide range of British cultural imports--film, theater, television, fashion design, and photography and, perhaps most powerfully, pop music--led Britain to be associated, ostensibly, with modernity and social change.
