  • Communication studies benefitted from various disciplines from the field of social sciences such as literature, psychology, history, anthropology, politics and rhetoric, and from the field of natural sciences such as engineering, architecture, computer sciences etc. However, communication studies appeared as a unique discipline after the First World War and the Second World War. Besides the story of communication studies can not be conceived of apart from the fields mentioned and it causes hard to form a history which is unique to communication studies. Communication studies used methods of these fields and followed their paradigms. Despite the difficulties of considering communication studies as a singular field of study, in a rough periodization we can count the years between the First World War and the Second World War also the point in which communication studies started to be popular. This period was characterized by the studies on propaganda. Most of the studies in this period were quantitative and followed the positivist paradigm. In the post-war period, it was claimed that the cultural and social life of the individual had a significant role in communication, therefore the importance of identity in communication studies and the amount of studies based on critical theory was increased. During this period, it can be noted that the quantity of qualitative studies based on structuralism and post-structuralisms increased and also these studies turned their faces to language and culture especially popular culture. The positivist paradigm has begun to be discussed in social science and new methods and approaches has formed in the area. In this study, the role and the responsibility of qualitative research in communication studies are considered with examples of qualitative methods. The samples of the study are communication ethnography, critical discourse analysis and semiotics.
