- Highlights • This study shows the very early onset of protection in ferrets, mice and chicken against HPAIV H5N1 challenge infection. • The tested modified live influenza strain was shown to protect mammals as well as birds against HPAIV as early as three days after immunization. • We could induce complete protection (“steril immunity”) seven days after a single shot immunization. • The novel neuraminidase-negative strain variant was innocuous in mice, chicken and ferrets.
