• The nasal structures of fishes belonging to the suborder Notothenioidei were studied. All five families of the Notothenioidei were certified to have a single external nostril as mentioned by previous investigators. In addition, an accessory nasal sac associated with the main nasal cavity was found, a structure never described before in these fish groups. One of the possibilities of the function of the accessory nasal sac is to increase the amount of water entering into the nasal cavity by periodically changing the pressure in the oral cavity. Disadvantages of the single nostril condition may be compensated by this function.
