  • The Philippines joined the United Nations initiative, Education for All (EFA) by 2015; however, in 2008 there were 100,000 more Filipino street children out of school than when the EFA's mandate began. The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship between the length of stay (LOS) of street children placed in Christians' Haven's program (Mindanao, Philippines), exposure to trauma types (ETT) prior to entry into the program, and academic achievement, based on the last scholastic report on the client file. Guided by the attachment and ecological model of developmental theory, as well as the tenets of trauma theory, a quasi-experimental design was employed to understand how LOS and ETT could influence a child's academic achievement. Christians' Haven provided historical client records as a source of archival data which were analyzed through a 2-way ANOVA with a between subjects design. The results failed to find significance between LOS and academic achievement or any statistical significance between ETT and academic achievement. There was no significance in the interaction between LOS and ETT. The lack of significance suggests that lengthy attachments are not necessary for academic achievement and specific trauma exposure does not preclude a child from learning. Therefore, social change will be evident as agencies, educators, and social service workers implement mental health-supported mobile classrooms that promote attachment relationships. It is through attachment, neural plasticity, and education that optimal learning environments are created and EFA will be achieved for street children in the Philippines.
