  • Using Bass and Avolio's MLQ to measure leadership style, and mirroring the levels described in the 1994 National Agenda for Achieving Better Results for Children and Youth with Disabilities, this study investigated leadership styles among advocates for people with disabilities, working at local, state, and national/federal levels. A literature review found few quantitative studies on this topic. Although several pieces of federal legislation protecting the rights of Americans with disabilities have passed since 1974, full inclusion of people with disabilities into communities remains elusive. Leadership focuses on change, as does the paradigm shift required for communities to embrace the belief that everyone can contribute to the community. While their work did not focus on advocacy, the work of Bass and Avolio (1994) and the Full Range Leadership Model provides a framework for studying leadership styles among advocates. The relationship to a person with disabilities, the years of experience as an advocate, and the level at which an advocate works were all found to be influences that effected leadership styles. Further study is needed to determine if these influences and differences are indicators of a need to rethink and/or expand the strategies for advocacy and leadership training currently being used.
