• The vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) 850 incorporates developments resulting from wind energy R&D conducted in the UK during the 1980s. The straight-bladed demonstration VAWT has a swept area of 850 m super(2) and a rated power of 500 kw. The design objectives for the VAWT 850 were to maintain simplicity, to maximize reliability and minimize capital cost, and to reduce maintenance requirements. Construction and operation of the first VAWT 850 in Wales are described. When started to 33% speed, the turbine was shown to satisfactorily run up to synchronous speed and to generate net power down to 4.4 mps wind speed.
