• An essay in a collected work on the techniques, production, and social meaning and functions of gold jewelry, Antiquity-Middle Ages, studies the Roman period reuse of coins as ornament for jewelry, exploring the variety of meanings (e.g., apotropaic, political, religious, etc.) associated with this practice, and the difficulty in determining the original motives for such reuse in a given instance. Also points to the problem in determining the date of the reuse (since the coin provides only a "post quem", i.e., the reuse must occur after the date of coinage), and hence of ascertaining the significance that was attributed to the iconography of the coin. Observes that while rare examples of reuse are known prior to the Republican period, most instances post-date the early Imperial age. Surveys examples of pendants, necklaces, fibulas, rings, and (rarely) bracelets, and the techniques used, and notes that in archaeological terms, the greatest concentrations of such pieces were excavated in peripheral parts of the Empire (e.g., Gaul, the Danube area, Egypt, etc.).
