Up until now museums and their staff were hardly an object of sociological research as participants in cultural- and creative industries. It is an occupational field to which the typical label "creative industries" applies. The hallmarks of this kind of creative industry are for instance limited work contracts -- which from a biographical work perspective translate to uncertain employment conditions -- an organization structured around project based work as well as a high level of autonomy and creative ambition exercised by the employees themselves. Referring to empirical results of an explorative research project on the occupational field of museums, the article delivers an insight into the terms of employment and working processes in museums, especially in reference to the interpretation and concrete coping strategies from the point of view of the employees. Although it becomes apparent that the love of art expresses itself in the love of work, for museum staff it is neither possible nor desirable to separate spatio-temporally as well as emotionally between work and life.
