Effectiveness of H sub(2)O sub(2), peracetic acid (PAA), UV irradiation, ozonation and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in disinfecting anaerobically treated effluent is evaluated. It is observed that disinfection of UASB treated effluent by UV irradiation, ozone, PAA, hydrogen peroxide, and AOPs yields high rates of inactivation of pathogens. Better mass transfer and high liquid gas contact can be achieved during ozonation by increasing the water column height for the same sample volume, which may result in reduction in ozone dose up to 33 percent. Temperature appears to be the governing factor in the microbial reactivation other than the residual concentration of the disinfectants. Due to warm enteric nature of the observed microbes, high reactivation is observed at 35 degree C as compared to 20 degree C.
