  • The response of biomarkers and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the brown mussel Perna perna sampled at different sites of the Sao Sebastiao Channel was assessed. Two sampling periods were conducted to evaluate the biological responses in different oceanographic conditions. Tissue dry weight was recorded for the organisms that were used for chemical analysis. The multivariate analysis showed higher correlation between the biomarker responses with concentrations of metals. The differences in the contamination and response patterns that occurred between winter and summer could be explained not only by the presence of multiple contamination sources but also by the dispersion pattern in the channel. The results concluded that the biochemical, cellular, and physiological biomarker responses obtained might be considered as the first signal of the effects of pollution in the region.
