  • The performance of silica-supported zinc triflate catalysts immobilized on the surface of the spinning disc reactor (SDR) for the isomerization reaction of alpha -pinene oxide to campholenic aldehyde was studied. Process selectivity and conversion were assessed to determine the viability of SDR for performing catalytic reaction under a range of SDR operating conditions. The short and controllable disc residence time in the SDR promoted the desired reaction and minimized unwanted side reactions for enhanced process selectivity. Increasing the disc speed and increasing the reactant flow rate on the disc, which had the combined effect of reducing the residence time, achieved a rise in selectivity from 0 to 75 percent. The results demonstrated that SDR process provides a greener, flexible environment for the alpha -pinene oxide rearrangement reaction with no catalysts losses and no inorganic waste stream.
