• In some acid lakes formed by coal, mineral ore, sand or gravel extraction the acidity was caused by exposure of pyrite to air inducing microbially mediated oxidation and the production of sulphuric acid. Activated sludge was added to a small lake formed by sand excavation followed by the addition of calcium hydrated lime. The pH rose from 3 to 10. Sediment cores and overlying water were analysed and the rate and extent of sulphate reduction investigated. The organic material acted as a chemical filter removing acidic sulphate as it entered and converted it to neutral sulphide.
