The future development of genetically engineered horticultural products will depend on the promotional capabilities of large corporations, which will dominate the market. The global produce market is growing as products and processes are streamlined and value is added through processing or packaging. Imports are favored by a growing US palate and an expectation of year-round availability. As the world's largest importer of produce, the US exercises significant control over the market and the development of genetically engineered foods. China, which is moving toward biotechnology, also will have a strong influence.
