  • Two highly charged, synthetic clays were prepared that specifically remove radium and immobilize it at room temperature for safe disposal. They may be useful for decontaminating water and soil polluted with radioactive radium from nuclear industry wastes or from naturally occurring uranium. The two synthetic micas were prepared either from sol gel precursors or from metakaolinite and MgO precursors. Radium uptake by the synthetic clays was compared with that of several natural montmorillonite clays, using NaCl test solutions that contained 60 240 million times more sodium than radium. The best-performing clay was one of the synthetic micas, which removed 95.4% of the radium from 0.5 M NaCl solution. The process of selective uptake by this mica was investigated by substituting barium for radium and analyzing the equilibrium Na/Ba isotherm.
