• One of the welcome features of the New Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary as realized online are summaries of recent scholarship on the origins and history of words under study, accessed via the button Etymology. These would have been to discursive and lengthy, and thus costly, to have figured in earlier printed versions of the work. This, and related new potential, should guide the editors in the ongoing work of revising older entries as concerns etymological information and other historical aspects of the lexis. A number of other editorial shortcomings should also be addressed. These are listed briefly in this introduction. The profit to be drawn from heightened attention to certain aspects of the dynamics of vocabulary formation is illustrated in the etymological commentary devoted to a selection of some 20 English words that follows in the body of this article.
