Numerous plastics applications require the use of fillers, e.g., to reduce costs or to modify mechanical properties (e.g. stiffness, dimensional stability and shrinkage). There are many different fillers available for this purpose, ranging from spherical particles (e.g. calcium carbonate) to platelet-shaped (e.g. talc or montmorillonite; nano-composites formed therefrom by intercalation and exfoliation), to needle-shaped (e.g. wollastonite) and tubular (e.g. halloysite) structures (Fig. 1). These fillers, mostly of natural origin, are commercially available in different qualities and purity grades, and in a wide range of particle sizes.
