  • The investigation of a disused sulphide ore mining area in Georgia, U.S.A. , reported has shown that small streams can be significantly contaminated by abandoned mining operations. Heavy metal contamination of such streams may be a function of the cyclic precipitation and dissolution of iron/manganese oxyhydroxides.
