  • Adults of T. confusum Jacquelin du Val from cultures reared on media treated with sublethal doses of synergized pyrethrins were tested at periodic intervals for resistance to the toxic effects of the pesticide, repellency or attractancy of treated paper, and preference for treated or untreated media. After being reared for ca. 4 years on media treated with 50:500 ppm pyrethrins: piperonyl butoxide, the insects developed resistance of 9.1-fold at the LD sub(95). Insects taken from the 50:500 medium after 1.25 years (six filial generations) and reared continuously on media treated with 100:1,000 ppm synergized pyrethrins for 2.67 years developed resistance of 27.7-fold at the LD sub(95). However, these insects were still significantly repelled by concentrations of 5:50 mu g/cm super(2) on kraft paper and 50:500 ppm in treated rearing media although their response was somewhat diminished. The resistant insects were slower to leave a treated area than were the untreated controls.
