The use of direct aqueous injection gas chromatography for the analysis of volatile polar organics, such as acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, and tetrahydrofuran, is proposed. Such compounds were not amenable to analysis by the purge-and-trap method because of their poor purging efficiency and low breakthrough volumes, and solvent extraction was not really practicable, leaving only direct aqueous injection gas chromatography as a realistic method. An evaluation of a number of detector types led to the selection of the flame-ionization detector. The use of columns with a relatively thick film of a methylsilicone stationary phase enabled the resolution of substances with volatilities as high as that of acetone from the 'water' peak.
