• Examines the iconography of the 15th-16th-century Netherlandish painter Gerard David's "Triptych of the baptism of Christ" (1501-07). Notes that the painting of the outer wings was carried out after the inner panels were completed, a supposition which the author employs to suggest that the painting depicting the donatrix and her daughter were "added portraits." Comments on the common presence of these types of added portraits in early Netherlandish painting. Through the study of contemporaneous documents, attempts to identify the figures depicted in the later-executed outer panels, hypothesizing regarding the impetus behind their inclusion in the triptych.
