• Introduces the work of Jan Tschichold (1904-74), who developed from a calligrapher to one of the leading typographers of the Bauhaus. The author describes his views on typography as expressed in his book Die Neue Typographie (1927), and his advocacy of industrial methods in contrast to the ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement. He discusses his designs for Allen Lane's Penguin Press, whose house designer he became in 1946 while living in Basle, and his lasting influence on market strategy as well as typography.
