Discusses the life of the 90 year-old art collector and dealer Heinz Berggruen, on the occasion of his being made an Honorary Citizen of Berlin for having sold his collection of modern art to the city for a low price. The author reports that the collection is now housed in Friedrich Stühler's late classical pavilion, explains that the collection opened to the public in 1996 and has since had 1.2 million visitors, and considers Berggruen's Jewish heritage. She notes that Berggruen has had a collection of his early essays, written for the Frankfurter Zeitung published in a volume entitled Kleine Abschiede, remarks that he once had an affair with Frida Kahlo while assistant to the director of the San Francisco Museum of Art, and comments on his period working in UNESCO's art department following the Second World War. She concludes by referring to some paintings in his collection, including Picasso's The Yellow Sweater (1939; col. illus.).
