Beschreibungen/Notizen
  • With reference to the exhibition Little Dances of Misfortunes on show at the Max Protetch Gallery in New York (21 Feb.-23 March 2002), discusses the work of the German-born, U.S.A.-based video artist Oliver Herring. The author describes Herring's early work in memory of the drag performer Ethyl Eichelberger, comments on the evolution of his work with reference to his videos Multiple Fake (1977), Videosketch #5 and Videosketch #1 (1998), and reports on Herring's use of amateur performers and makeshift settings in his recent work. She explores the relationship between Herring's sculpture and video with reference to his two-screen projection Sleepless Nights (2001; illus.), compares the work to Surrealist events staged by Jean Cocteau and photographed by Man Ray and Cecil Beaton, and focuses on his multi-channel work Little Dances of Misfortunes (2002; illus.). She examines the continuing affinity of Herring s work with that of Eichelberger, and considers the transformative nature of his work.
