• With reference to an exhibition at the Mucsarnok in Budapest (12 Dec. 2001-Jan. 2002), considers the work of the Hungarian artist László Fehér. The author charts retrospective exhibitions of and publications on Fehér's work during the 1990s, explains the origins of the present exhibition, and comments on the limited selection of works included in it. He explores the changes in Fehér's styles and themes since the mid-1970s, highlights the transitional work Diaszpóra (Diaspora) (1982), and examines how the works in the present exhibition relate to earlier ones. He profiles Fehér's Stégen II (On the landing II) (1996; illus.), Folyónál (Szürke Ház) (At the river (grey house)) (1997), and Fürdozok (Bathers) (2000) in a discussion of works whose central theme is water, contends that the recent series of paintings reflects his search for his childhood, and concludes by reviewing the portraits of people close to the artist from the 1990s to 2001.
