"The Winter's Tale" contains an echo of one of the essays in Plutarch's "Moralia". Philemon Holland's English translation of the "Moralia" had appeared in 1603 making it readily available to Shakespeare. The spider image is used to colour the phenomenon of the sudden reversal of poles of feeling described by Plutarch, though in Shakespeare what "interposeth itself" is only an illusion, a deceitful likeness of reason.
